Wow, it’s been close to a year without any updates. Sorry for that, things have just been crazy. I have moved back to NY, bought an apartment, got engaged :), rotated to the global Dove team at Unilever and am working on a new innovation platform for 2010, been streamlining Dabbledoo Media given the economic downturn, and have recently launched dabbledoo/design letting me be a bit more creative.

Most of my online posting is now either at www.gadgetell.com (@gadgetgell) or on my personal Twitter via @AdamB, though I’ll try to check in here and there.

Sorry I have been gone lately. This post isn’t do much more to wet your pallet. Yesterday my internet was kaput and today I am working on an upcoming Dabbledoo interview as well as a pretty big thing. I can’t talk about the big thing yet, but when it goes live I will be sure to blog about it here.

Me, a travel agent

To put it bluntly, I had a rather crappy week of work. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t mind the 4 days work week (well 3.5 days for me since I went in after Linds left on Tuesday), but what I did just sucked.

As part of a workshop I am planning in Barcelona at the end on April, I spent the week booking hotels and planning the event. I wouldn’t have minded this if I had started planning from the beginning — I would have been down with it 5 weeks ago. Rather a colleague of mine had been in charge of booking everything and we can just say that he never finished it, so it fell onto my plate.

It is so inefficient for me to have to spend a week of my time planning hotels and conference space, when it literally could have been done 5 weeks ago and in much less time. I also found out that on the European teams, not only do I have to plan the bookings, I have to essentially “hand-hold” everyone to make sure they book their flights, hotels rooms, the proper number of nights, how they are getting from the airport to the hotel, etc. No one likes to travel without the proper information, but it seems ridiculous, this level of guidance.

It all comes down to the learning experience, being part of the global team, located in Europe. There is a very different style of working. Sometimes better than in the US, sometimes worse, and sometimes it is just different. While I can be frustrated and disagree with how they work, I’ll take it as a learning experience for me, as I move forward in my career and manage other people.

What I want to accomplish in ’08

Doug has written a recent post with his goals (BHAG) for 2008. After reading these for a few weeks, I am compelled to do the same, though maybe not as extensive as his. I feel like 10 things in 1 year (or 9 months) is a good start. So, in no particular order:

Study for/take the GMAT. TBD if I want to go to B-school and when, but this is the first step.
Seriously consider buying an apartment when I get back from Germany
Push myself beyond my comfort zone as I move to a new brand/position with Unilever upon my return from Germany. It is very easy to relate to the Axe target.
Enjoy the summer. Get to the beach, my parent’s pool, concert, and more.
Learn a bit about coding. The basics/difference of/between PHP, ASP, CodeIgniter, AJAX, RubyOnRails, Java Script
Live healthier. Get back in shape, exercise more, east better.
Though slightly contrary to the point above, party/do more. I am young, living in Hamburg/NYC, there is no reason to be so boring (besides money). This doesn’t have to be drinking, it can be cultural events, museums, opera/ballet, live music (besides headline acts), reading, seeing independent movies
Go somewhere cool. A film festival, a web conference, ski somewhere out of the ordinary, travel to South America, get to TED or All Thing Digital (given my financial situation I expect that I can only do one of the above)
Expand my network – make use of technology and face to face opportunities to network with people. Utilize LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, my blog, Pounce, Flickr, and more.
…. – I am going to leave this one open-ended, if I don’t I feel like I am trapped in and can’t pick something else along the way.

Do you think I’m missing anything? Any that you would change or remove? I’m all ears.

Watched the Steve Ballmer interview by Guy Kawasaki live from Mix in Vegas
Followed the ExpressionEngine 2.0 developer preview, thanks to David’s Tweets
Started (again) to Tweet and Pounce since people laugh at me for updating my status on Facebook
Writing a blog post to follow this one, as well as taping some videos
Doing my taxes
Watched the recent Digg Townhall
Upgraded Dabbledoo’s Google Hosted account to the new Gmail, and installed Better Gmail 2
Thinking about strategy and what it mean/how to do it (see bullet 5)

I just came back from 2.5 days in Berlin for some Axe focus groups. I am really surprised how similar German guys are, when compared to American guys. I guess when it comes to design, girls, and their lives guys are still guys.

Office life in Hamburg
